The winter quiet and the year's last preparations

The second week of December brought the particular quiet that the winter reserves for it: the year’s business winding down, the streets taking on the season’s light, and the preparations for the holidays and the new year beginning in earnest. The quiet is the year’s last pause, and the pause is the season’s gift before the turning.

The second week of December brought the particular quiet that the winter reserves for it, and the quiet was the year’s last pause. The year’s business began to wind down, the sessions and the deadlines giving way to the holidays that the calendar has fixed; the streets took on the season’s light, the early dusk and the decorations that the cities have begun to hang; and the preparations for the holidays and the new year began in earnest, the shopping, the travel, the plans that the season’s end commands. The quiet is the year’s last pause, and the pause is the season’s gift before the turning.

The year’s winding down is the part of the week that the institutional calendars have set. The parliaments and the sessions have begun their recesses, the negotiations have scheduled their follow-ups for the new year, and the offices have moved toward the reduced rhythms that the season imposes; the winding is the year’s closing, and the closing’s pace is the one that the winter sets. The business will resume in the new year, and the resumption is the reason the winding is only a pause.

The season’s light is the part of the week that the cities and the towns have begun to carry. The decorations that the streets have taken on, the lights and the trees that the public squares display, and the particular glow that the early evenings provide, all of it is the season’s staging, and the staging is the winter’s own theatre; the light is the counterpoint to the year’s grey, and the counterpoint is the season’s gift. The streets are being dressed, and the dressing is the week’s quiet work.

The preparations are the part of the week that the households and the businesses have begun to conduct. The gifts are being chosen and wrapped, the travel is being booked and the tables planned, and the plans that the new year will require are being made in the offices that the recesses leave open; the preparations are the season’s logistics, and the logistics are the week’s domestic machinery. The preparations will be completed through the month’s course, and the completion will be the holidays’ arrival.

The year’s record, held in the winter’s quiet, is the record that the year’s events have produced, and the record’s reading is the one that the turning will conduct; the conflicts and the settlements, the decisions and the deferrals, the records and the rituals that the seasons have assembled, all of it is waiting, in the quiet of the preparations, for the form that the new year will give it. The reading is the year’s conclusion, and the conclusion’s preparation is the week’s deeper work, the work that the shopping and the travel frame.

The quiet’s end will come with the holidays and the turning that the month’s end brings, and the turning will be the year’s final act; the year’s business will pause, the season’s rituals will be kept, and the new year will begin with the record that the year has produced. The winter quiet arrived in the second week of December with the year’s last preparations under way, and the quiet is the pause before the turning; the business is winding, the streets are lit, and the preparations are being made for the holidays and the new year, which is the season’s work and the year’s last chapter.
